Are you retirement ready?  Where are you on the journey?  Find out here.

Retirement, downsizing and pursuing an alternative lifestyle option may seem an emotional and daunting task, but the start point, having a discussion and sketching out a transition plan needn’t be such an uncomfortable process.

Let’s start at the beginning, and establish what stage are you at in the four stages of retirement planning? Click here to experience Dr Riley Moynes TED presentation on this very subject.  He suggests there are four phases and from my experiences having left the military after 42 years, his observations are remarkably accurate.  So, what are the phases?

Phase one – we mostly enter the ‘holiday’ mode with little to do but enjoy the freedom and release of the moment.  This lasts, apparently twelve months or so before we enter:

Phase two – here we begin to note the losses in our daily routine having left gainful employment.  Routine, Identity, Relationships, Purpose, and Power.  If not dealt with sensitively these emotions can develop into the three ‘D’s’; Divorce, Depression and Decline.

Phase three – is where experimentation comes to hand in that important activities are sought to fill the inevitable void. Volunteering, memoirs and quality time supporting family and friends for example.

Phase four – is reinvestment in life and the establishment of a meaningful mission in life whatever that might be.

This talk is well worth investing twelve minutes of your time – try it and let me know your thoughts.

Once you are comfortable in your new role, the lifestyle journey and downsizing options become so much simpler.

When it comes time to seek assistance and start the journey, we can help clients make the right decisions and avoid the common pitfalls of downsizing. For instance, you may have identified a new home, but will it facilitate the lifestyle you now want to lead? That’s where the team at Seniors Real Estate come in. Like you, we’re of a more mature age too—we understand what you’re going through at this stage of your life and can help you navigate the tricky waters of planning, considering suitable and affordable lifestyle when on the buying and selling journey.

Good luck and do get in touch.
